For years we cruised in the Med every summer – starting with our speed boat which we towed behing our motorhome (RV), then in several fast cabin cruisers which grew in size with each step and most recently sailing onboard our Bavaria 40 Cruiser Avantgarde “Liberation”. Our sailing blog documents our travels from Slovenia where she was commissioned – through Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Malta and Italy. In 2019, we returned to Greece where we very sadly handed her over to new owners.
Liberation was meant to be an “interim” boat – to get out on the water all summer while were waiting for our trawler. First we had to save up – then we had to sell our business and our properties, before we could place the order. Then we had to wait while she was built! When we bought Liberation we had already begun planning for our future world cruise but expected it would be a few years away. Learning to sail after 20+ years of cruising with fast motor yachts was our first preparation for the slower life. A very different prospect when power is not the easy solution to every problem you encounter!
We used Liberation as our testing ground for many of the live-aboard solutions we intended to fit on our trawler. We tested out concepts to see what worked and what we really needed. It was a difficult day when we left her behind in Greece – she was the best boat we have ever had! Her new owners will benefit from a very high spec boat and we helped them at the start to learn the systems on board.
Upgrades
We wrote a very detailed owners manual – the sort of document we can write for any owner for their own boat. We can also help you to make upgrades to improve your comfort, working within budget and space constraints on an average sized sailing yacht. Space is always a constraint on any boat – you build to the space you have available (and a bit more ….). We have helped several owners configure their boats to accommodate smart solutions for their liveaboard comfort – we believe that living on a sailboat does not need to be rough, nor does it need to be expensive to have a few creature comforts. Our sailing blog documents some of the technical solutions we found along the way. We upgraded battery systems to lithium, water systems, electronics and the anchor among other things. We talk about the breakdowns and problems of course – like all boats. Living onboard all summer, we also got to see some wonderful places in Europe. We will miss sailing in the Med!
